You are standing in the chilled aisle holding two bottles. One is yoghurt you recognise. The other is kefir, costs more, and claims thirty-something strains on the front in a font that is trying very hard. So: kefir vs yoghurt — is the pricier one actually doing more for your gut, or are you paying for the label?
I drank kefir daily for six months mostly because I had read it was better, without ever checking what better meant, which is also roughly how I ended up owning a £40 candle. Here is the checking, done late.

What is actually different
The kefir vs yoghurt difference starts with what does the fermenting.
Yoghurt is made with a small, defined set of bacteria — typically two, sometimes a handful more if the manufacturer adds them.
Kefir is fermented with kefir grains, which are a whole community: multiple bacterial species plus yeasts, working together. That is why it is thinner, fizzier and sharper, and why the strain count on the bottle is genuinely higher rather than marketing arithmetic.
Evidence: Strong that the microbial content differs. Moderate that this translates into a meaningfully different outcome for you. More strains is a plausible advantage, not a demonstrated one. Diversity on a label is not the same as diversity in your colon.
What the trials show
Evidence: Moderate for fermented foods as a category. The most interesting work here is a small Stanford trial in which people eating several servings of fermented foods daily for ten weeks showed increased gut microbial diversity and lower markers of inflammation. A high-fibre arm did not produce the same effect over that timeframe.
Small study, healthy participants, short window. But it is one of the better pieces of human evidence we have, and it points at fermented foods generally — kefir, live yoghurt, kimchi, sauerkraut — rather than crowning one winner.
Head-to-head trials pitting kefir directly against yoghurt for gut outcomes are thin on the ground. Anyone stating confidently that kefir is three times better is extrapolating.
The fermented food you enjoy enough to eat daily outperforms the superior one sitting unopened at the back of your fridge.
The lactose question
Both are lower in lactose than milk, because the bacteria consume some of it during fermentation. Kefir tends to go further, and its longer ferment plus the enzymes present mean many people who react to milk manage kefir comfortably.
That said, if dairy genuinely does not suit you, this is not a workaround worth forcing. Worth reading: do you actually need to give up dairy?
How to read the label
Look for live or active cultures. Heat-treated versions are shelf-stable, pleasant, and microbially beside the point.
Check the sugar. A strawberry yoghurt with three teaspoons of sugar in it is a pudding with a health halo. Buy plain and add berries, seeds or nuts yourself.
Ignore the strain count on the front. Thirty strains of unspecified provenance tells you less than one well-studied strain at a stated dose — cereal boxes have been making bold claims about whole grains for decades, and look how that turned out. This is the same problem as the probiotic aisle, in a colder fridge.
Protein matters too. Greek-style yoghurt typically carries more protein per serving than kefir, which is a real advantage if breakfast is where your protein tends to go missing.

Kefir vs yoghurt: which should you buy?
Kefir if you want the broadest microbial mix, you tolerate the tang, and you will drink it rather than let it turn in the door of the fridge.
Live Greek-style yoghurt if protein is your priority, or if kefir tastes like a punishment to you. It still delivers live cultures daily.
Honestly, both, on rotation. Variety is the through-line in almost all of this. And if dairy is out, unsweetened coconut or water kefir carries the cultures without the protein — a fair trade, but know what you are trading.
Start small
Half a glass, or a couple of tablespoons of yoghurt, and build over a fortnight. Going from nothing to a full bottle on day one produces a memorable afternoon and very little else. If bloating persists well beyond that, the cause is probably elsewhere — bloating is frequently not about the food at all.

Is kefir better than yoghurt for gut health?
Kefir contains more microbial species, including yeasts, so it is plausibly broader in effect. Direct head-to-head trials are lacking, so the honest answer is that kefir looks slightly more promising and both are worth eating.
Can I drink kefir if I am lactose intolerant?
Many people with lactose intolerance tolerate kefir well because fermentation reduces the lactose content. Start with a small amount, and stop if it does not suit you.
How much kefir should I drink a day?
Most studies use somewhere between 100ml and 250ml daily. Starting at the lower end and building up is more comfortable and just as effective.
