The Estrobolome: How Gut Bacteria Recycle Your Estrogen

There is a specific community of bacteria living in your gut whose collective job description includes deciding how much oestrogen you keep. It has a name — the estrobolome — and once you know about it, a lot of otherwise unrelated symptoms start making sense together.

The pathway, without the biochemistry degree

Evidence: Strong for the mechanism, emerging for the interventions.

Your liver deals with used oestrogen by attaching a molecule to it — a process called conjugation. That parcel travels into the gut, marked for disposal.

Certain gut bacteria produce an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase, which snips the parcel open. The oestrogen is freed and reabsorbed back into circulation instead of leaving.

A degree of this is completely normal. Too much activity, and you are recirculating oestrogen you had already finished with.

Why this matters with PCOS

Multiple studies have found measurably lower gut microbial diversity in women with PCOS compared with controls. Lower diversity is associated with less efficient oestrogen clearance, higher inflammatory markers and poorer blood sugar control.

Whether the microbiome changes are a cause or a consequence is not settled, and anyone telling you otherwise is ahead of the evidence. What is reasonably clear is that the relationship runs in both directions.

Oestrogen you do not excrete gets reabsorbed. Transit time is a hormonal variable, not just a comfort one.

What actually shifts it

Adequate fibre, increased slowly. Fibre binds conjugated oestrogen and helps carry it out. Psyllium has the strongest evidence base of the supplemental options.

Daily transit. If things are not moving, reabsorption has more opportunity. Movement, magnesium and actual water matter more here than anything you can buy in a jar.

What will not shift it

Detox teas, which are a diuretic and a laxative in attractive packaging. Calcium-D-glucarate is frequently sold on exactly this mechanism — it does inhibit beta-glucuronidase in laboratory settings, but human evidence for meaningful hormonal effects is thin. File it under plausible but unproven.

Questions people actually ask

Should I take a beta-glucuronidase inhibitor?

I would not start there. The supplements sold on this mechanism have laboratory rationale and very little human outcome data. Plant diversity and transit time are better evidenced and considerably cheaper.

Does this mean I have oestrogen dominance?

That term is used widely online and is not a recognised clinical diagnosis. The underlying idea — that the balance between hormones matters — is reasonable; the label carries more certainty than the science does.

How long before the microbiome changes?

Dietary changes begin shifting bacterial populations within days, but a meaningful, stable change in diversity takes closer to four to eight weeks of consistency.
